Oil Valley Center for the Arts Class Schedule

Classes meet in the first floor of the National Transit Building (206 Seneca Street, Oil City). Transit Annex studios are on the second floor of the Transit Annex, located at 210 Seneca Street.

All material/supply fees are paid directly to the instructor at the first day of class.  All other fees should be sent to the Oil Valley Center for the Arts, 206 Seneca Street, Oil City PA  16301, with a note stating the class(es) you wish to take.  Checks should be made out to the Oil Valley Center for the Arts. Registration for each class closes one week before the class begins.

August 23, 24, 25, 26   STAINED GLASS MIRROR

with  Dorothy Mitchell   5:30-8:30 p.m.

Add a classy touch to your home décor by creating a wall mirror,

enhanced with stained glass. Design your own project or select

from those suggestions provided by the instructor.

 Some prior stained glass experience is required.

Class Fee:  $90       Materials Fee: Varies with student needs

August 28   SILVER JEWELRY

with   Alice Walkowski     10:00-5:00

A basic introduction to rolling, texturing, cutting, shaping & finishing

metal clay. You will learn how to torch fire your piece & finish it for a

shiny, matte or antiqued look…..then wear  home your creation!

September 7,14,21 28, Oct 5, 12     POETRY

with  Norm Milliken    7:00-8:30 p.m.

Bring your  notebook & pencil and join Norm for this six-session

Poetry workshop which is sure to be helpful to all levels of poets, from

beginner to advanced.  A variety of poetry styles & techniques will

be discussed and experimented with.

September 11 & 18    STAINED GLASS/INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS

with  Dorothy Mitchell      9:00-4:00

Experienced stained glass artists who desire to create one-of-a-kind

projects & enjoy the association with fellow artisans are urged to

register for this class.  Participants are asked to select a work of

their choice & use the classroom experience to learn new techniques,

enhance skills, or simply share and enjoy.

September 11 & 18   SOURDOUGH  BREAD IS NO MYSTERY!

with  Denny Lavery     12:00 noon-4:00

Learn how to make breads with starters & how to create and maintain

your own starter. Both white & whole-grain breads will be made.

This is an on-hands course so bring your apron!  Class held

at Classy Catering at 228 Seneca Street.

 September 13 & 20  MONOCHROMATIC PEN & INK ON PORCELAIN

with  Linda Lineman    6-9:00 p.m.

This class utilizes the technique of pen work to create a scene….

an excellent class for beginners.  Design your piece & do all the

detail with pen & a fired ink. Learn about color values by using

one color to finish your china project.

 September 15  BASIC JEWELRY “WIRING”

with Gary Rhoades     1:00-4:00

Make the “Egyptian Sisters Necklace” in your choice of silver, gold or copper

wire.  You will learn how to make spirals & join them together to make this

beautiful necklace. Tools will be furnished if necessary but please bring

round nose, chain nose & flat nose pliers  & flush cutters if possible.

September 25   LINOLEUM BLOCK PRINTING

with  Mary Hamilton    10:00-4:00

A great one-day workshop with nationally-recognized printer

Mary Hamilton to learn the basics of her artform and then

to create one of your own!  Time will permit you to cut a      

design (come with some ideas of what you’d like to make)

& print some simple small notecards suitable for holiday

cards or any simple notes for yourself or gifts.

 September 28, Oct 5,19,26   KNITTING

with Jane Bigelow    1:00-3:00

A “Top Down Sweater Class”….great class for beginners to

advanced knitters with something for everyone!  Start at the neck

& design as you go using any yarn you like. Choose long or short or

 ¾ length sleeves; make it fitted or loose….the possibilities are endless!

October 2-3   INTAGLIO PRINTING

with  Carol McDonald      10:00-4:00

An old method of printing from the 1400’s brought to life with today’s

selection of materials. You will make a “plate” base of different layers/

surfaces & using wet paper applied to that base, make prints of your

own design,  Creative, a bit messy and FUN….come explore this

ancient technique!  For all levels beginner to advanced.

October 8-11   WATERCOLOR PAINTING

“What to SEE and how to EXPRESS it”

with Sue Pollins    9:00-4:00

Back by popular demand, Sue returns to OVCA to bring this

 4-day watercolor painting retreat, a time to analyze, assess &

adjust your own paintings to make them more successful. Individualized

demos & exercises for your drawing & technical challenges along with

group-led discussions & critiques of why we paint as well as how we paint.

For all levels of painters….beginner to advanced.  You are welcome to use

your watercolors plus any  water-soluble pencil, crayon, media.  More

 information is available on this great upcoming workshop!

October 12, 19, 26 & November 2, 9, 16    CHAIR CANING/SEAT REPAIR

with  Rainy Linn     9:30-12:00 noon  

Meet with Rainy on six Tuesdays to repair or replace the seat on your old

chair or stool.  It’s not difficult but is time consuming & requires a bit of

patience.  Bring  your chair on the first morning & let Rainy discuss with

you the work to be done & then measure for needed materials. She will

order what is needed & by the 2nd class you’ll be all set to get to work!

October 15-17   “EXPLORING  PASTEL  PAINTING”

with Carol Donnelly    9:00-4:00

A pastel class for all levels of painters, beginner to advanced, with Carol

who is the past-president of the Pittsburgh Pastel Artist League. Each day

of this weekend a new concept will be discussed & a new painting will be

completed...with one day devoted to plein air painting, weather permitting.

You will learn different approaches to applying pastels, results of wetting

the pastels after applying  & reworking a pastel painting you have felt

unhappy with.  A great three days of  working with pastels!

October 23    BY-PASS RING from METAL CLAY

with Alice Walkowski     9:00-5:00

Students will make a ring with a textured band and a focal decoration.

 The ring is made flat and shaped “after” firing.  Extra pieces may be made

 & fired from leftover clay.  Ask to see a photo of  this sample project!

It’s unique and beautiful!!

November 6 & 13   STAINED GLASS KALEIDOSCOPES

Students will have the opportunity to gaze into a colorful make-believe

world after creating their own stained glass kaleidoscope.  This project

is perfect for gift-giving or a unique conversation piece.  Some previous

stained glass experience is required.

 November 9 & 16        6:00-8:00 p.m.

INTRODUCTION TO FAIR ISLE KNITTING

with  Jane Bigelow

The project is a HAT…after working the ribbing for the bottom

of the hat, you will work a fair isle pattern using several different

colors to form the fair isle design.  As well as learning to follow a

graph, you will learn to hold and knit with one color of yarn in your left

hand & another in the right hand. We will discuss how to alter the

 pattern to make it more feminine or more masculine.

These hats make great Christmas gifts.

November 11     IRIS FOLDING:CREATIVE CHRISTMAS CARDS!

with  Liz Graham        5:30-8:00 p.m.

Create unique Christmas cards for family & friends with the Iris Folding

technique that is easy & fun and results in beautiful designs with very

little work or material.  Students will complete two cards plus a gift

tag in class.

November 20      10:00-4:00     

MAKE YOUR OWN “RUBBER” STAMP

with  Carol McDonald

Using “fun foam” (not rubber) you will design your own unique

stamp which you can use multiple times for projects such as holiday

cards, small notecards or ATC’s.  A fun day of art plus take home some

finished cards, ready to use!  No experience required.

  2. Early registration is recommended as space is limited to each class.
  3. Students will be notified of acceptance by mail, phone or email.
  4. Class Materials Fee will be collected by instructor...please do not include with your original check for class.
  5. Should a class need to be cancelled, you will be notified and you will receive a full refund.
