Oil Valley Center for the Arts Class Schedule

Classes meet in the first floor of the National Transit Building (206 Seneca Street, Oil City). Transit Annex studios are on the second floor of the Transit Annex, located at 210 Seneca Street.

All material/supply fees are paid directly to the instructor at the first day of class.  All other fees should be sent to the Oil Valley Center for the Arts, 206 Seneca Street, Oil City PA  16301, with a note stating the class(es) you wish to take.  Checks should be made out to the Oil Valley Center for the Arts. Registration for each class closes one week before the class begins.

March 13   PIE & TART CRUSTS (Problems & Solutions)

Learn how to make tender, flaky pie & tart crusts for

main dish & dessert uses. An on-hands course with results

March 20-21  “THE BEAUTY OF WINTER”

A PASTEL PAINTING WORKSHOP

A weekend workshop for all levels of painters to create a snowy

 winter scene of beauty.  Bring wintery photos or pictures for reference,

 soft pastels with extra whites and enjoy this class which will consist of

demos, tips, lots of painting time & critiques!

A class designed for those with no previous glass experience.  All

activities are “hands-on” with students creating a minimum of  three

projects using both copper foil & lead came methods of construction.

Create a project by painting on fired glass with instruction by Linda

No prior painting experience required but students need prior glass work.

“Building a Solid Painting”  with  Bill Perry

Back by popular demand, Bill offers a series of exercises, insights

& demonstrations to help each student more fully realize & express their

individual style. Principles, elements & design fundamentals will be

emphasized along with process, timing & execution as fundamental to a

sound painting.  Students bring their own paints/supplies.

May 8 & 15  STAINED GLASS-PANEL CONSTRUCTION

Designed for those with some basic stained glass experience & who wish to

build a panel using the copper foil method. Panels, framed in zinc channel, will

be suitable to insert in a cabinet door or to hang for its elegant beauty.

June 23  “THIS CLASS IS FOR THE BIRDS”

with Denny Butler   1:00-3:00

Perhaps not a good title, but very fitting as students will definitely learn how

to care for their caged birds & specifically for parrots of all sizes.  Whether you

own a bird or would like to bring a bird into your family or just learn more about

them, you will enjoy this class.  Topics such as diet & nutrition, behavior, social-

ization, grooming, wing trimming, talking, even “sex and the single parrot” will be

discussed. Denny Butler , an instructor for PEAC  Pittsburgh’s ( Parrot  Education

 Adoption  Center ) will bring his own parrots to class for “show ‘n’ tell.”.

June 25---5-9:00 p.m.  June 26—9:00-5:00

A mini-weekend with clay expert from Pittsburgh who will begin

on Friday evening with “Organic & Contemporary Clay” making

several pieces of jewelry using clay, paints, powders, wire & more

to produce wearable works of art.  “A Polymer Clay Primer” is on

tap for Saturday for students to learn the basics of this most versatile

medium….come & get acquainted & experiment with polymer!

 June 29-30   “FUN WITH WATER MEDIA”

For the beginner to advanced student, this fun workshop will help students

 learn to let the colors flow by creating spirit to bring life to the back-

ground on watercolor paper….then use them to design paintings,

greeting cards, bookmarks & more!  Students bring materials.

 July 7   BASIC JEWELRY “WIRING”

with  Gary Rhoades     1:00-3:00

Learn how to make simple loops, wrapped loops, S-hooks, head pins &

spirals and by the end of class you’ll have the basics to be able to make

earrings, bracelets & necklaces and complete a pair of earrings to wear home!

Tools will be provided but students are asked to bring round nose pliers,

chain nose pliers, flat nose pliers & flush cutters if possible.

July 9-10  PAINTING ON SILK

with  Eulaine Ellis Eri    10:00-4:00

An exciting technique….draw a simple design on silk & stretch it on a

frame.  Outline each shape with a resist to control the flow of the dye, then

apply dyes in various colors.  Learn to set the dye & finish the project.

No experience needed.

July 12-13-14  “THE ART OF CLOWNING”

A fun class for anyone ages 8-108 who would like to learn

 more about the age-old mystique of clowning from Denny

 Butler who has been making people laugh as “Ictus”  for six years.

  Learn the history & types of clowns…even some balloon-tying tips,

 magic tricks & of  course colorful make-up.  This is a great workshop

 for intergenerational fun……grandparent & grandchildren together

 making lifetime memories….however, all “want-to-be” clowns of

 any age are welcome!

July 29-31,Aug. 1  “NATURE PRINTING ON PAPER & CLOTH”

Learn the Nature Printing process from this nationally-recognized

printer & author of a new book on the subject.  Inks & paints are

carefully coated onto  plants & pressed  onto  paper or fabric to capture the

 beauty  &  intricacy of nature.  Work at first on simple projects, then

 progress to those more complicated.  Beginner to advanced  printers are

 welcome  to register for this 4-day  very special workshop.

an oil lamp….a wonderful gift for home wine-makers!

for color combinations & a variety of textures to tell your visual story.

Students will work with 100% sheep’s wool to create a small purse

or a mitten.  You will lay out the wool, agitate it into fiber/felt &

use a template to make your project…almost like magic!  Wear

An old method of printing from the 1400’s brought to life with today’s

selection of materials. You will make a “plate” base of different layers/

surfaces & using wet paper applied to that base, make prints of your

own design,  Creative, a bit messy and FUN….come explore this

ancient technique!  For all levels beginner to advanced.

October 8-11   WATERCOLOR PAINTING

“What to SEE and how to EXPRESS it”

with Sue Pollins    9:00-4:00

Back by popular demand, Sue returns to OVCA to bring this

 4-day watercolor painting retreat, a time to analyze, assess &

adjust your own paintings to make them more successful. Individualized

demos & exercises for your drawing & technical challenges along with

group-led discussions & critiques of why we paint as well as how we paint.

For all levels of painters….beginner to advanced.  You are welcome to use

your watercolors plus any  water-soluble pencil, crayon, media.  More

Meet with Rainy on six Tuesdays to repair or replace the seat on your old

chair or stool.  It’s not difficult but is time consuming & requires a bit of

patience.  Bring  your chair on the first morning & let Rainy discuss with

you the work to be done & then measure for needed materials. She will

order what is needed & by the 2nd class you’ll be all set to get to work!

October 15-17   “EXPLORING  PASTEL  PAINTING”

A pastel class for all levels of painters, beginner to advanced, with Carol

who is the past-president of the Pittsburgh Pastel Artist League. Each day

of this weekend a new concept will be discussed & a new painting will be

completed...with one day devoted to plein air painting, weather permitting.

You will learn different approaches to applying pastels, results of wetting

the pastels after applying  & reworking a pastel painting you have felt

unhappy with.  A great three days of  working with pastels!

October 23    BY-PASS RING from METAL CLAY

Students will make a ring with a textured band and a focal decoration.

 The ring is made flat and shaped “after” firing.  Extra pieces may be made

INTRODUCTION TO FAIR ISLE KNITTING

with  Jane Bigelow

The project is a HAT…after working the ribbing for the bottom

of the hat, you will work a fair isle pattern using several different

colors to form the fair isle design.  As well as learning to follow a

graph, you will learn to hold and knit with one color of yarn in your left

hand & another in the right hand. We will discuss how to alter the

 pattern to make it more feminine or more masculine.

These hats make great Christmas gifts.

MAKE YOUR OWN “RUBBER” STAMP

Using “fun foam” (not rubber) you will design your own unique

stamp which you can use multiple times for projects such as holiday

finished cards, ready to use!  No experience required.

November 27     PAPER  ARTS/WALL PHOTO CALENDAR

A fun class as you “preserve your memories” throughout the year

by creating a hanging wall photo calendar to keep for yourself or give

as a gift.  Bring 12 photos to adhere to your calendar or you can

add them later when you return home.
