OIL VALLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS

CLASS SCHEDULE for 2012

We invite you to read our Class Schedule listed here. Please check out the wide-assortment of educational workshops offered in many different disciplines in classes from a few hours in length to those for a long-weekend…..even some which meet on a weekly basis for several weeks.   There are workshops specifically geared for the beginner student as well as classes for the advanced student.

We are proud of our teaching staff and we endeavor to bring you the best instruction by the best teachers we know…both locally and those from around the country. The Oil Valley Center for the Arts is located on the first floor in the historic National Transit Building at 206 Seneca Street in downtown Oil City.  Parking is available on Seneca Street & nearby.  We suggest that you enter through the double doors on Seneca Street and proceed upstairs by the stairway or the elevator nearby.  Students must register in advance for all classes by sending  their name, address, telephone & email information and listing what classes they wish to take to:

 A check (made payable to the Oil City Arts Council) must be included.  Do not include any Materials Fee when registering…..these fees will be collected by the instructor at the beginning of each class.  Registration for many classes will close one week before the class begins to give instructors sufficient preparation time…..so we do recommend that students  register as early as possible. For additional class information or class availability, students may call the  Class Coordinator at 814-677-3707.

                 March 24  PYSANKY-UKRAINIAN EGG DECORATING

with Judi Detar     9-12 noon and 1:30-4:30

Practice the ancient art of Pysanky, beautifully painted hollow

Easter eggs.  Learn the basic skills & create your own egg to take

home to share with your family for the upcoming holiday!  These

are two separate classes…take one or both sessions.

March 26-29  STAINED GLASS FOR BEGINNERS

with Dorothy Mitchell   5:30-8:30 p.m.

This class is designed for those who have had no previous experience

working with stained glass.  All activities are “hands on” with participants

creating a minimum of three projects, using both the copper foil and lead

came methods of construction during this four-evening class.

Class Fee: $90    Materials Fee:  $55

March 31  SLATE PAINTING for EASTER

with Linda Lineman  9:00 a.m.--12:30

No experience required and all supplies furnished for this

fun painting class to create an Easter design on slate!

April 14  ZENTANGLES for TEACHERS

with Anita Roby-Lavery   9:00-4:00

Learn the creative drawing form called zentangle & how this

tool can be used in your classroom.  With zentangle, drawing can become

relaxing, intuitive and fun while increasing a child’s (or your own) personal

sense of well-being, creativity & focus.  It can be applied to such classroom

challenges as problem solving, team building & focus with ADHD, self-esteem

& stress management.  This class , taught by a certified Zentangle teacher,

qualifies for Act 48.  Same class also offered on August 11.

April 17, 19, 24 & 26  STAINED GLASS II

with Dorothy Mitchell  5:30-8:30 p.m.

This class will provide an opportunity for those with minimal experience to

apply & strengthen their knowledge of stained glass construction. Students will

complete one or two panels from a personal design or from suggestions made by

the instructor.      Class Fee:  $90     Materials Fee:  Varies with chosen project

April 22   ZENTANGLES for CHILDREN

“Zentangle is an easy-to-learn and relaxing method of making beautiful

images from repetitive strokes.”  It helps build self-confidence and self-esteem

and aids in concentration.  This two-hour Sunday  afternoon class is open to

children (3rd grade and up) and their parents.    

 Class Fee:  $15       Materials Fee:  $6

April 28-29     WATERCOLOR PAINTING

     for BEGINNERS

with Rosalyn Parker   10:00-4:00

Have you always wanted to try watercolor painting but didn’t quite

know how to begin….then, this is the class for you!   Learn about

the different kinds of paint and brushes and papers…..learn how to mix

colors and do washes….and much more!  No experience is necessary and,

 if you’ve dabbled a bit with this medium yet still consider yourself a

beginner,  this class is for you too!  Rosalyn is a good instructor to get you

started, help you to understand and grow to love this method of painting.

Bring your notebook & pencil and join Rebecca for this new four-

session evening workshop on writing poetry….any kind of poetry!

May 5   IRIS FOLDING

A fun Iris Folding project, suitable for framing! This 5 x 7 project

based on a music theme will teach new iris students the basic steps

of this artform & give experienced iris students some new & different

ways to use the skills.  Cut-off date for registrations is April 30th.

A Saturday afternoon porcelain project using decals and

feathered painting to create a very special project for that

May 12   QUILTING with ZENTANGLE

June 2-3   IMAGINATIVE COLLAGE

with Carol McDonald   10:00-4:00

If you ask Carol “What is Collage?” She’ll say “I think of it as

a compelling arrangement of design using colors, textures & shapes

overlayed with handmade & printed items plus “odd parts” of  things.

You can start with a theme or just let your image unfold. We will start with

a primed canvas and end with a wonderful dimensional work of art.”

A fun weekend to relax & create with others who enjoy the arts!

June 4,11,18  FINDING YOUR CREATIVE

SPIRIT THROUGH YOGA   

with Gary Marzolf & Pat Baumgardner  5:45-8:15

Tap into your creative/artistic self by uniting body, mind & spirit through

yoga breathing & simple postures combined with basic drawing &

painting exercises. No yoga or drawing experience necessary! There

will be no critiques or formal sharing of the results of your explorations.

Whether you are learning photography for the first time or you

just want to fine-tune your skills, join published photographer

Mike Henderson for a fun & exciting journey into the basics of

photography!  All digital cameras welcome, although much

discussion will be relative to the SLR.  A six-week evening class

plus two optional field trips!  Ask for more information!

July 12  JEWELRY CLASS

with Susan Tarr   1:30-3:30

If you love jewelry but have never made any yourself, this is the

class you need…….it’s basic and fun!  Learn about some of the

materials available & the “how to’s” of simple jewelrymaking.

If time permits, you will make a necklace, bracelet & earrings.

July 14  STAINED GLASS REPAIR/CHEMICAL

 ETCHING  with Dorothy Mitchell   9:00-4:00

This one-day class will allow students to learn various techniques

relative to stained glass.  If you have admired etchings on glass, this is

the opportunity to learn & apply the method of chemical etching.  If you

 wish to learn the art of repairing a broken piece of glass in a completed

project, bring your item (s) to this class & restore it to its original beauty.

BOOKS FOR CHILDREN with John Manders  6-9:00 p.m.

Back by popular demand, John offers this six-session workshop “Every

 Picture Tells a Story: An Introduction to Children’s Illustrations.”  Students

should have some basic drawing & painting ability.  More information is

available.  A great series of classes with a great master artist/illustrator

who has  illustrated 25+ books and zillions of stories…plus

written his first book last year!

August 4-5   PASTEL PAINTING WEEKEND

A weekend workshop for all levels of painters to create the freshness

of summer with their pastels!  Bring some of your favorite summery

photos or pictures for reference plus your soft pastels.  Enjoy the class

which will consist of demos, tips, lots of painting time & critiques.

August 6-10   TRIPLE PLAY….METAL CLAY

with Alice Walkowski   10:00-4:00

Learn all about working with silver, copper and bronze in this week-

long class held in Alice’s Studio in the Transit Building.  The class

will cover the basics of working with the clay, combining clays, firing

and finishing this amazing medium.  Create your own jewelry,

miniatures or other artistic visions using the techniques learned in class.

 You can get  a head start on your holiday gift giving by creating

one-of-a-kind gifts.    Space is limited…register early!

August 18, 21 and 23   STAINED GLASS

LEAD CAME PANEL CONSTRUCTION

with Dorothy Mitchell   8/18  9-4:00 & 8/21 & 23  5:30-8:30 p.m.

While much of today’s stained glass is crafted using the copper foil method, the

oldest method of construction is with the use of lead came.  Students in this

class will build a panel suitable for a cabinet door, small window, or

simply for hanging; using lead came construction.  A working

 knowledge of creating with stained glass is required.

August 25-26  A PAPER ARTS WEEKEND

with  DIANE MAUER  10:00-4:00

Two workshops in one with Diane Mauer who is recognized internationally

as a master paper artist!!  How excited & proud to bring this outstanding

artist, author of 13 books, to Oil City for this wonderful weekend!!  You will

work in both Suminagashi (Japanese Paper Marbling) and Paste Papers

 throughout this weekend.  Ask for more information.

Spend this Sunday afternoon on the Transit Trolley as you ride around

Oil City and learn more about the art which we drive by almost everyday &

perhaps never stop to think about!  The “arts” are all around us and Neil

will help us to learn more about them, the obvious and not so obvious. A

 mix of artistry and architecture, some history & more!  A walking tour

of the National Transit Building after our ride is also included for those

able and interested.       Fee:  $20

Learn the basics of “Colonial-style” Rug Hooking using recycled

¼” strips of wool to create a small sampler (approx. 10x12”) which

could be used as a chair mat or small table mat/centerpiece.  This is a

3-session class intended for beginners or novices.

WATERMEDIA  with Sue Pollins    9:00-4:00

You CAN do it!!    Join Sue using elements & principles of design

to build abstract paintings utilizing your unique vision.  All painting

is abstract—some subjective & some non-objective—you choose how

close to REALISM suits you…….traditional methods plus exploration

excite growth & technique!

The duplicate stitch is a stunning way to embellish & personalize a

stockinette sweater. This stitch is worked over each knitted stitch

so that the duplicate stitch looks like it was actually knitted into

the sweater.  Bring to class a light colored stockinette sweater

& scissors.   Floss, needles & pattern will be provided.

& use some of nature’s beauty usually left behind in the fall. 

You will make several projects for holiday decorations such as a

corn husk angel, seed ornaments & more.  Bring a hot glue gun….

Beginners to experienced basketmakers are invited to join Bonnie

for the day to make a medium-sized MELON BASKET….always a

popular design.  All you need to bring is a pair of scissors and she

will supply everything else you need!  If you’ve always wanted

to make a basket, this is your chance…it’s fun!!!

November 24   SWEDISH MINI-ART FESTIVAL

with  Charlotte Randall   10:00-12:00 noon

Discover the fun of making some small Swedish holiday projects

in this Saturday morning class perfect for an inter-generational

experience and intended for ages 8 years and up.  Grandmothers…

bring your grandchild…fun for both of you!  Small

materials fee will cover all supplies needed.
