From October, 1999 through March, 2000, three Arts Council Board Members, Bob Flath, Marilyn Karns and Libby Williams, participated in the regional MIRA (Managing Information in Rural America) seminars on art and culture. MIRA is funded by the Kellogg Foundation, which offered a $15,000 grant for a community project. The Arts and Culture team’s application for funding was accepted for a project that would bring recognition to the arts program in the high schools in Oil Country, and to the graduates from those schools who have pursued successful professional careers in a field of the arts.
In the implementation of the grant, Jim Self, a 1961 Oil City High School graduate who has become an acclaimed tuba player and music educator, returned to Oil City along with his Basset Hound Blues Band
for a concert, which was held Nov. 18, 2000. At this concert, an Artist Director produced by the Arts and Culture team was distributed.
The directory contains biographical data on arts professionals from Oil Country high schools. Persons who did not attend the concert may obtain a copy of the directory at the Transit Fine Arts Gallery. Copies have also be placed in area school and public libraries.
